📰 The Local Rundown

🏨 Roanoke's Downtown Hotel Finally Has a Name

Photo: Mayor Scooter Gierisch Facebook

Roanoke's long-planned downtown hotel finally has a name: The Cade, a Hilton hotel. The city revealed the brand at the project's groundbreaking on Wednesday, Oct. 7, at 600 S. Oak St., where the 205-room hotel will rise alongside a new city-owned convention center.

The convention center is funded by the $62 million bond Roanoke voters approved in May 2025, while the hotel will be privately owned and operated, Mayor Scooter Gierisch said. Industry outlet Connect CRE reports the hotel will join Hilton's Curio Collection as The Cade Roanoke, with about 20,000 square feet of meeting space and a parking garage.

Construction actually began in August, and Connect CRE reports the project should take about 23 months. If you're downtown on Oak Street, expect to see crews at work for a while.

🛴 Southlake Tightens E-Bike & Scooter Rules

Go for a ride

If someone in your house rides an e-bike or scooter in Southlake, new regulations are on the way. City Council approved Ordinance No. 735C on second reading at its Oct. 6 meeting, adding 15 violations tied to e-bikes and motorized scooters and more responsibility for parents of riders under 18.

According to Community Impact's report on the Oct. 6 vote, the key rules include:

  • A 15 mph limit on sidewalks and trails

  • No bikes, e-bikes or scooters on sidewalks in the Town Square District

  • No scooters on roads with a speed limit of 35 mph or more when there's no sidewalk

  • No pocket bikes or mini motorbikes on roads, sidewalks or city trails

  • A front lamp and a red rear lamp or reflector on every device

  • No phones or headphones for riders under 18

  • Parents can be cited along with a child who rides without a helmet

Police Chief Ashleigh Casey told Community Impact that violations typically mean a Class C misdemeanor with a fine of up to $500, and three or more could lead to impoundment. The city hasn't announced when the new rules take effect, so watch for details before they're on the books.
