📰 The Local Rundown

🍺 Oktoberfest Southlake Turns 25 This Weekend

Get your lederhosen out of the closet. Oktoberfest Southlake turns 25 this year, and the Southlake Chamber of Commerce's three-day festival takes over Southlake Town Square from Friday, Oct. 16, through Sunday, Oct. 18.

Hours are Friday 4-11 PM, Saturday 10 AM-11 PM and Sunday noon-7 PM, and both admission and parking are free. Expect bratwurst, pretzels and schnitzel, live music on three stages, a children's area, the Stein Hoisting Contest and the always-popular Wiener Dog Races. The chamber says the festival draws more than 100,000 people a year, so plan accordingly.

Parking is in the East Garage (1451 Federal Way) and the West Garage (351 State St.). There's no shuttle this year, and the chamber suggests rideshare instead. Leave backpacks, large bags and outside food and drinks at home. Leashed, well-behaved pets are welcome.

🏫 What's on Keller ISD's $828 Million Bond

If you live in Keller ISD, you'll find five school bond propositions on your Nov. 3 ballot, adding up to $828 million. It's the district's first bond proposal since 2019, and it's built on recommendations from a citizens committee of more than 65 people who toured campuses and studied district finances from January to June.

Here's what each proposition covers, according to the district:

  • Prop A, $756.3 million: roofing, HVAC, plumbing, electrical, code compliance and safety systems at 34 campuses and facilities, plus a partial rebuild of Keller Middle School.

  • Prop B, $28 million: student and staff devices, which the district now buys out of its operating budget (about $6 million a year).

  • Prop C, $8.9 million: repairs to the Keller ISD Natatorium, which is currently closed.

  • Prop D, $11 million: Athletic Complex repairs (lighting, track, turf and restrooms) and a renovation of the Keller High School Field House.

  • Prop E, $23.9 million: artificial turf at every KISD middle school and at the high school baseball and softball fields.

The district says all five can be funded at its current tax rate. You'll still see the words "property tax increase" on each one, because state law requires that language whenever bonds are repaid with property tax revenue. Early voting runs Oct. 19-30, and Tarrant County voters can use any vote center.

🗺️ Northwest ISD Is Redrawing Its High School Map

If your kids are in Northwest ISD schools around Roanoke, Trophy Club or Haslet, there's a new high school map to check. The district is redrawing its high school attendance zones ahead of Davis High School, its fourth comprehensive high school, which opens in August 2027 with freshmen and sophomores only.

The district says Byron Nelson, Eaton and Northwest high schools are each nearing or past their 3,200-student design capacity, and Eaton is already over. The proposed 2027-28 map is online now, and you can type in your address to see which high school your home would be zoned for.

There's one public input meeting left: Tuesday, Oct. 20, 6-7 PM, in Eaton High School's Performing Arts Center, focused on the proposed Davis zone and students moving from Northwest to Eaton. Families from any affected school can attend, or email feedback to [email protected]. The school board is scheduled to vote Monday, Nov. 9.
