Closing Soon: Own a Stake in the Future of Popcorn

The popcorn brand that keeps making headlines is entering the final stretch of its investment round.

Popsmith raised $348,000 on Kickstarter before it ever reached a store shelf, and in 2024 it was named one of Oprah’s Favorite Things. Retail partnerships with Williams Sonoma, Costco, and Crate & Barrel have further cemented its position in the premium home and kitchen market.

Now Popsmith is raising capital to bring its Poppers and popcorn into more kitchens, and individual investors have just a few weeks left to own shares.

📰 The Local Rundown

🎁 Northwest ISD's Angel Tree Has 1,900+ Kids Waiting

Northwest ISD's virtual Angel Tree is open, and more than 1,900 students are listed this year. The program matches neighbors with children in the district who have shown a need for help this school year, so each one has gifts to open over the holidays. Kids are listed anonymously, and individuals, families, businesses, faith groups and other organizations are all welcome to take part.

Here's how to adopt an angel:

  • Choose a child (or several) on the district's Angel Tree site.

  • Buy new gifts. The suggested value is $100 to $150 per child, and gifts should stay unwrapped.

  • Drop them off with a printed copy of the Angel ID form at the old NISD Maintenance Building, 1800 Hwy. 114 in Justin, weekdays from 8 AM to 5 PM, by Monday, Nov. 30.

On Nov. 30, extra drop-off hours run from 5 to 7 PM at the maintenance building and at Eaton and Byron Nelson high schools. District offices close for Thanksgiving break Nov. 23-27, so plan around that week. If you'd rather give time, the district also needs volunteers to receive and sort gifts.

🚻 Bates Street Park Could Get Restrooms Sooner

Public restrooms along Bates Street in Old Town Keller could arrive a year earlier than planned. At a Nov. 3 work session, City Council members agreed with a staff option to move the project from the 2027-28 budget year into 2026-27, with one council member noting he'd rather lock in today's prices than next year's, Community Impact reported.

The tentative spot is next to Bates Street Park, the park beside the Keller History Museum that opened in fall 2024, though staff said other locations are possible with utility relocations. The plan calls for a prefabricated building with two stalls each in the men's and women's restrooms, plus two family restrooms that are ADA accessible and include baby-changing stations. Staff would add a shade structure, a drinking fountain alcove and a wall that could carry a mural.

The building would cost $475,000 to $535,000, and the city would budget $500,000 to $600,000 for the whole project. It takes six to eight months to build and can be up and running the same day it's delivered. The goal is to have it open around the time Elm Street construction wraps up, which is expected at the end of 2027.

It isn't final yet. The city still has to post notice of a budget amendment, and the council has to approve the purchase contract.

🍰 A New Cheesecake Shop Built on Grandma's Recipes

🆕 New Opening: Cole's Custom Cheesecakes | 8700 N. Tarrant Pkwy., #103, North Richland Hills

Cole's Custom Cheesecakes opened its first storefront on North Tarrant Parkway in October, after years of selling from pop-ups, farmers markets and the counter at JR's BBQ-N-More in Keller. Owner Cole Jones started the business in 2020 while caring for his grandmother, learning her recipes along the way, and he picked up the Keller Chamber of Commerce's Best New Business Award in 2023. Her baking still steers the menu: the shop's best-seller is the Grandma's Sweet Potato Pie cheesecake, built on what was her signature pie.

You'll find cheesecake by the slice, whole 9-inch cheesecakes and bite-size minis, made fresh and never frozen, according to the shop. It's takeout only, with no dining room. Hours are Tuesday through Saturday, 10 AM to 7 PM, and the shop is closed Sunday and Monday.
